The darkness stakes its claim on day
Intent on taking life away.
The leaves begin asphyxiating,
Starved of light, they’re suffocating.

Beholders gawk in wonderment
At gasping breaths so candescent.
Reverence earned by mutating,

Darkness closes its savage grip,
One by one leaves begin to slip.
On the ground they’re congregating,
Starved of light, they’re suffocating.

As the leaves tumble
The colors of Autumn fade
Trees brace themselves for Winter

Droplets of sunlight
Release flickers of hope and
Promise the return of Spring
