Cheers to 1 Year!

Thank you to all of Carrie Mayhem’s followers! It has been an incredible year. I had no idea what I was doing when this blog first hit WordPress on January 16, 2014. Not only that, but I had no idea where I was going with it either. I owe my WP family a debt of gratitude for all of your guidance, support, and friendship. Thanks to you and my real life friends & family, I finally have direction. I am so excited about what 2015 is set to bring!

I’ve been working so hard on Mayhem Universe’s first publication, Mayhem Genesis, that this blogiversary snuck up on me. I have great big plans for Mayhem Universe. If things go well, this little world that started as a summer project for me and my son, will become bigger and badder than either of us ever anticipated. I wish I could share our scheme in greater detail, but it’s not time yet. Stay tuned..

Since I am so excited, I’ve decided to give you a sneak peek at a new Mayhem Universe short story trilogy, “The Twins”. The conclusion to this story, and 2 brand new stories related to these characters will be included in Mayhem Genesis. Enjoy and THANK YOU! MY LOVE TO YOU ALL! This dream wouldn’t be my reality without you!

Introduction: The Twins, part 1

“…Yes ma’am, twins, a boy and a girl… Yes, yes, I know you requested just a single male, but we did not realize… No, ma’am this is not how we usually do business… No, of course not, no additional cost… I know, it is very last-minute. We can find her another family if… Of course, I take full responsibility. I am very sorry for the mix-up… Yes, that price does include new identities and documentation for both siblings… Very well then, I will meet you there personally… Goodbye ma’am.”

Harry Mountebank exercised all of the restraint that he could muster and gently set his phone upon the desk. He rested his balding head in his hands and massaged his own temples. He inhaled sharply and growled to his son without looking at him, “Boy, you’ve managed to displease Victoria Vicious herself.”

“Father, I did as you said. I entered their quarters, grabbed the baby basket. It wasn’t until I was outside, when they both began crying, that I realized…” Stewart whined.

“So you didn’t glance in the bassinet before you grabbed it to make sure the boy was even in it?” The volume level of Harry’s voice rose as he continued his inquiry.

The girl child began to whimper and stir again in her bassinet.

“Shhhh! Don’t wake her!” Stewart whispered desperately. “The other one hasn’t stopped crying since I grabbed him. I can’t listen to them both wail again.”

Harry looked at his son incredulously. He rose from his seat and peeked into the bassinet. “What are you talking about?” His irritation was becoming concern.

Stewart covered his ears and shook his head. “Ms. Vicious should thank me. At least the girl is not miserable. Victoria is going to wish I had left that boy behind. He shrieks incessantly!”

Harry secured the girl’s pacifier. She was immediately soothed. As the siblings lay huddled peacefully together, he replied, “Son, I think you need to get some rest. This baby boy hasn’t made a peep since you walked in here with him.”

To be continued… Mayhem Genesis, coming soon!!

The Slayer of Stains

My Mother’s birthday is January 2nd. Go ahead, quiz me, I know that one. I don’t even have to think about. Still, it happens every single year. I survive Christmas. I plop my exhausted butt into a chair and wearily pat myself on the back for another holiday season success. Right around the time I’m primping for New Year’s Eve the realization strikes. Downtown stores are closed and don’t reopen until the 2nd, Mom’s birthday. So begins the scramble.. what do I get her? which place is open? how do I avoid traffic in getting there? Every. Single. Year. I’m pretty sure it’s not just me. If I had to wager, I’d say this has happened to her since birth. She deserves better.

Birthday cards are nice. They say pretty things and have shiny covers. Cards convey a blanket message that we all hope our loved ones already knew before we bestowed upon them folded paper adorned with glitter and words. My Mom knows that I love her. She knows that I respect her, that I’m thankful to have her in my corner, that I’m fortunate that she’s my friend. I’ve given her enough store-bought cards in the past to drive that point to the moon. This year I thought I’d try something a little different. Here are a few reasons (that I’ll never find in any greeting card) why my Mom is the best Mom.

My first life lesson: “Respect your elders.”
This is seriously the first thing I remember my mother saying repeatedly. I learned to mind my tongue at a very early age. I was rewarded by my elders with a tremendous amount of wisdom. It is amazing what is imparted if you just shut up and listen. I also raised my children this way. Now I get to reap the benefits of being their elder.

Inadvertent life lesson: “Girl power”
My Mom could do anything when I was a kid and she rarely needed help. From softball coach to fashion show emcee, she would take on any role. My friend and I still marvel at the one time Mom helped me move. Julie & I struggled with the couch. We were absolutely shamed when my tiny mother pushed us out of the way and humped that thing all the way inside by herself. Hell, even now she finds her doctor’s advice to be cute but not an overly effective barrier in accomplishing what needs to get done.

Unfortunate life lesson: “Never say ‘NO'”
My Mom is “girl power” all the way. She does not like to ask for help. She’ll take it when offered, of course. She is not, though, going to ask you to help. Ever. On the flip side, she will never say “No” to anyone who asks her for help. Even when she’s crushed under a weight of responsibility, if a friend needs a favor, she’s first in line. If she’s double-booked when a family member needs her ear, she simply multi-tasks. If she’s supposed to be taking it easy and a neighbor asks her to shovel, she shovels.

Most appreciated life lesson: “Cooking”
My Mom can cook and bake. She’s a Goddess in the kitchen. That is not an overstatement. My little home-chef Mom could give most celebrity chefs a run for their money. I was resistant to it for years, but her genius is finally starting to rub off on me. My kids and my husband are the ones who appreciate this life lesson most. They have to eat my cooking.

Yet-to-learn life lesson: “Stain removal”
I stained my favorite white lace dress with brown mustard. While trying to clean it, I tore the stitching. When I lamented to my Mom, she said, “Bring it over. I’ll see what I can do. It’s not like I can ruin it now.” Not only is that thing whiter than the day that I bought it, she also fixed the stitching so you can’t even find the damage I caused. Bacon grease from my husband’s Lions jersey, gone. Food, dirt, blood from my son’s favorite swim sweatshirt, erased. Mildew stains on a wet swimsuit left too long in a plastic bag, annihilated. She’s the Slayer of Stains.. or a sorceress.

Happy birthday, Mom! Thank you for being my how-to manual for life! I clearly still have a lot to learn. I LOVE YOU!

Vintage Adventure

Much like the Toy Story movies, my childhood toys all interacted with one another. I KNEW they were playing without me when I was not there. I was more a guest in their world than I was an owner or ruler of them. Candyland wasn’t a game for us. It was a place, a destination of sorts. Our adventures there went something like this…

Through my View-Master,
I saw Rainbow Trail.
I grabbed my protector.
We together set sail.

My Pet Monster & I
Walked hand in hand,
‘Til we met a green troll
There in Candyland.

His name was Plumpy,
He Etch-A-Sketched us a map.
We each took a plum,
And were off in a snap.

At the Peppermint Forest,
Mr. Mint happened by.
He mentioned a shortcut,
So we gave it a try.

On Gumdrop Pass,
I lost Monster somewhere,
But was joined then
By a Jolly Carebear.

At Licorice Castle,
That bear ran and hid.
However, I met
A Cabbage Patch Kid.

He asked me to take him
To see Gramma Nutt.
We marched onward until
We reached her small hut.

She was a sweet ol’ girl.
She gave enough goods
To get me through to
The Lollipop Woods.

At the edge of the thicket,
Oh what a sight.
Princess Lolly herself,
And her friend Rainbow Brite.

Just when I thought
This all to be a dream,
I happened upon
The Sea of Ice Cream.

Queen Frostine greeted me
With her husband, He-Man.
They introduced me to
The entire Smurf clan.

Thundercats lapped milk
From the shores of the sea,
Much to the delight of a
Nearby Monchichi.

As dusk grew near,
I Slinkied away
To cross Molasses Swamp
In the light of the day.

With sun on my path,
Still I got stuck,
Until GI Joe appeared
In his new Tonka truck.

He offered me a lift
To the home of King Kandy.
I hopped right aboard
And said, “That’d be dandy!”.

Candy Castle we reached
Before dinner’s bell.
GI Joe was Hungry Hungry Hippos.
I was as well.

Queen Barbie served the
Candy salad up first.
Their Garbage Pail Kids
Brought shakes for our thirst.

GI Joe went home but
I stayed for the night.
I hung with Teddy Ruxpin
And we played Lite-Brite.

Forever

Back in April, I shared a poem titled “Eternity“. It’s actually still one of my top 10 posts of all time. My husband wrote it for me years ago. That piece was actually part of a set of 2 poems. “Forever” and “Eternity” both still hang on my bedroom wall to this day.

For the last 4 years of my life I have been truly blessed. I never imagined the amount of happiness that could be bestowed upon me.

Over time our love has grown into something out of a fairy tale. We are inseparable, the victims of unconditional love.

Riches and wealth could be bestowed upon us and it wouldn’t make any difference. Our love is so strong that nothing can affect it. We just need each other and our family to make our lives and love complete.

Every passing day I feel like our bond is growing even stronger… more intense. We were placed on this Earth for each other. It is not a coincidence that we met. Our destiny was predetermined and it was fate that brought you into my life.

Volumes have been written and spoken about love but none share the intense feeling that I get when I lay eyes on you. That electricity is too strong to portray on paper or to vocalize. The current runs strong and will never fade.

Everything that I do is for you. I live for you. Every thought that runs through my head has something about you in it. The way you look at me makes my heart melt… it makes my head woozy with love. Your touch is exhilarating… electric. I long for that feeling.

Remember this year as the best year of your life. The birth of our son… the continuing maturation of our older children… the love that we share… no one on this Earth has a better or more fulfilling life than we do. The best part is that it has really only begun. We are infants in this wonderful relationship. Carrie, I love you now and forever.

It’s been a while since Brian has written poetry for me. Give this a like or leave a comment to encourage him to do it more often. 😉

Baby Love!

I am thrilled and honored to introduce you all to my 1st born grandbaby!! This is Weston Owen Foor. After subjecting his Mommy, my daughter, to 49 hours of labor, our little heartbreaker finally made his grand entrance. He’s perfect, happy, & healthy!! Mommy is doing well despite the 2-day long ordeal. Actually, after 1:00 am when we finally met this little man, Mommy looked downright stunning. Everyone made a comment about it. She certainly is tenacious.

Weston made his debut on October 30, 2014 at 11:34 pm. He weighed 6 lbs 4 oz, measured 19″, and has lots of dark hair. We hung around the hospital until the middle of the night so we could get our hands on him. I still haven’t kissed on him, or nibbled his little toes yet. I want to make sure I’m healthy before I literally drool over this little stunner.

My son, who is 12, waited very patiently until the wee hours of the morning to hold his new nephew. He’s never held a baby before. I think he’s a natural. Brandon was anxious to get back the next day and embrace Weston some more. This picture, my son holding my grandson, chokes me up a little. What a happy day this is!

Oh, and HAPPY HALLOWEEN!
